COMPASSION

A mixed-media sculptural portrait of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, celebrating his lifelong crusade for peace, reconciliation, and human dignity. Framed by salvaged LED backlight strips and anchored by exposed power circuitry, the piece positions Tutu’s famous gentle warmth as an essential source of light and energy. The mechanical framework serves as a conduit for his enduring philosophy of Ubuntu, the profound belief that our humanity is inextricably bound to one another through radical compassion.

Desmond Tutu Artwork: Compassion

Desmond Mpilo Tutu (1931 – 2021) was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first Black African to hold the position. Theologically, he sought to fuse ideas from Black theology with African theology.
